What would you think if you had all the Mondays of the school year off? Most kids would think yes! One less day of school! Also one day less of homework! Maybe others would think Oh man, that's one less day that I get to be with my friends. I think that we should not have a 4-day school week. The following will talk about the fun facts, the advantages, and the disadvantages of a 4-day school week.
Here are some fun facts about how a 4-day school week got started. The earliest 4-day school week was in a small, rural, town in South Dakota. It started sometime in the 1930’s. Then the 4-day week became more and more popular during the oil crisis in New Mexico. That was around the 1970’s. These days, most school districts with a 4-day week are small and usually have less than a 1,000 students attending the school.
There are a lot of advantages about having a 4-day school week. First, you would save a lot of gas money. You wouldn’t have to pay to transport the kids to and from school every morning and afternoon. It will also cut down on all the foodservice costs. Since energy is such a big crisis in the U.S. right now, having one less day of school a week will really cut down on your energy bills. You wouldn’t have to pay for the lighting of the heating or anything else that takes up a lot of energy.
It is also a great advantage because kids can now get jobs and they can work the whole day on Monday. They could start saving up their money and using it for important stuff instead of always asking mom and dad for money. It is also a great time to schedule appointments and other fun activities so you don't have to pull your kids out of school to do those things.
If the kids had a 4-day school week, teachers would have more time to prepare their lessons and more time to focus on the things that they are going to teach. The staff of the school also won’t likely have to find substitute teachers because they now can do all their appointments and other activities on the Monday that they have off.
But there are also a lot of disadvantages. The kids have to sit in school for a longer period of time. Most kids don't like this because they get restless, especially in the months getting closer to summer because the kids want to be outside. Also since you now have that Monday off, parents might have to put their kids in daycare which would increase the costs of having to send your kids there. Kids have less time to do all of their work since they are getting out of school later. Some kids even have to stay up way past their bed times just so they can finish all of their homework. Some parents might even make their kids give up on sports and other extra cirriculars because they get home so much later.
So in the end there are some very good things like saving lots of money and time but there are also a lot of disadvantages that come along with it.
Could of stressed a little bit more why we should not go to a 4 day week but other than that good essay.
