Hospitalized

I sat down and watched the doctor poke the needle into my best friends arm. She was crying so hard and I couldn't even think straight. I just wanted her to be happy and make everything better again.
It was a gorgeous day and I woke up thinking, “We have a softball game today!” It was going to be a really good day. I got to school and was happy the whole day. I had this different kind of cheerfulness about me and I loved it. It was after school now and it was time to go to Dawson-Boyd for the softball game. I was all dressed so I left all of my bags on the bus. I never realized that I wouldn't be riding the bus home that night.
The game that night was a double header and it started out pretty rough. We lost by quite a few in the first game but then we had to play another game. It was the top of the 8th and Abby was up to bat. She got this amazing hit! She sprinted around first, past second, and was on her way to third. As she was running to third everyone was yelling, “Slide!” The play was going to be very close. She slid into third and didn't get up. All of us were really scared because she was just laying there on the base crying.
Mary and Kari went out to the base and brought her back to the bench. But she would not stop crying. Something was really wrong and we all knew it. We went out to start the next inning even though Abby was sitting there crying on the bench. Since Abby’s parents weren't there that night. Scott and Lexi Wubben decided that she needed to go to the hospital.
The next thing I remember is Miss Groen calling my name because Abby wanted me. I ran over to the van and Lexi told me that Abby really wanted me to go along with them. We were then on our way to the Monte Hospital going 95 MPH down the highway. I remember Abby screaming every time we hit a little bump in the road. I really wanted to cry but I couldn't because Cayden was sitting on my lap and Tyler was sitting right next to me. I didn't want them to be any more scared. So I held it in.
We finally got to the hospital and they laid Abby on a stretcher and took her into a little room. She was still crying and the doctor said that we had to calm her down. Since Pastor Steve was in a meeting and Angie was in Vancouver, we had to calm her down. They finally decided that she needed an IV. They stuck it in her arm but then had to take it out again because the drugs that were in it weren't strong enough. Then they put another one into her arm that had much stronger drugs in it.
Finally Pastor Steve got done with his meeting and met us at the hospital. They let him talk to Abby for a while and then she had to go get x-rays to see what was wrong with her leg. We just sat and waited in the waiting room until she was done. It was the longest wait of my life but I had Cayden to distract me because he was running all over the place. She finally came out and the doctor called us in to tell us what was wrong. We found out that she had pulled her quad muscle really far and it would be a few weeks before it felt better. She also had to use crutches for a while.
We finally got to go home and I stayed with her for a few hours until she was feeling better. I got home around 11 and immediately went to bed. It had been a really long day. As I was laying in my bed I began to think about if one of my friends would ever do that for me. I would do that again for her in a heart beat. I then got the thinking that I have such amazing friends. I know they will always be there when I need them and will do anything for me. Even though that was like the scariest night of my life, I realized that I have amazing friends.

Grandma Groen

Do you have one of those grandmas that is always there for you and you could talk to them for hours on end? Is she a great influence in your life and points you towards God? Well that is exactly who my grandma is.
Right from the beginning my grandma was a strong Christian and was raised in a large family. My grandma was the first of nine kids. Her parents, my great-grandparents were really strict with their kids but they weren't around a lot because they had to support all of their 9 kids. So that lead to my grandma being the “mom” figure in the house. She always cooked and took care of her 8 little brothers and sisters. They were all raised to go to church every Sunday. Their parents made them go to church even if they were really sick. The only time they could stay home was if they threw up.
One day, when my grandma was a little bit older, her brother Charles fell into a tank that was holding water for their livestock and he drown. This was so hard on my grandma and the rest of her family. She still talks about it today and she gets tears in her eyes. They were really close and it just really hit my grandma hard. But she had to keep her head up high for all of her little brothers and sisters.
When she was 18, she moved out of the house and got married to my grandpa Alvin. They lived in a tiny house and then they began to have kids. They had my aunt Kim, then my uncle Craig, then my dad, and two more girls after that. My grandparents were pretty strict with their kids too but not as bad as my great-grandparents.
Although my grandpa had some heart problems and he had to go to dialysis almost everyday, she was always there with him and she always comforted him through all of it. Then a few years back, my grandpa got really sick and they immediatly transported him to the hospital. He was in the hospital for a few days and then had a heart attack. He didn't make it past that heart attack and he died soon after.
Even though she lost the person that was closest to her, she was so strong though it all. She was so strong when she came over to my house and talked about my grandpa and all that he did.
When I get older I want to be just like my grandma. I want to find a husband that I can be with for the rest of my life and take care of him even in the really rough times. I want to be strong like her and follow in her Godly footsteps. Some day I want my grandkids to think of me in this way and always come to me if they need help. Just like I always go to my grandma. We could talk for hours and hours and not run out of things to talk about. I love looking at old pictures with her and hearing  all about my dad and my grandpa.
She is such an inspiration to me because of the ways she acts. She follows in God’s way and she trusted Him with everything even after my grandpa died.
I know that I can come to her with everything and she is the best grandma in the world! I love her so very much!

Beach Volleyball vs. Indoor Volleyball

Do you like that power and drive you feel when you get an ace? Do you like the feeling of having an amazing victory over your rivals? Do you like the feeling of getting a ground shaking kill? But do you hate being inside a gym all the time? If you do, then beach volleyball is a great sport for you to play.
Beach volleyball was first played in Honolulu, HI in 1915. It was first played at the Outrigger Canoe Club. The most famous player was a man named Duke Kahanamoku. The sport began to spread all around the county and eventually became popular around the world.
Indoor volleyball was first invented on February 9, 1896 in Holyoke, Mass. by William G. Morgan. He was a Y.M.C.A. physical education director and he created the game of volleyball which was originally called mintonette. He invented it by the characteristics of tennis and hardball. It then became very popular and teams began playing it all around the world.
There are some similarities between indoor volleyball and beach volleyball. First of all, they are both played with a ball called a volleyball. During the actual game play, both teams play up to 25 points with no cap. Some other teams will both play up to 21 with no cap. One of the teams has to have a victory by more than 2 points. Both teams will also play a 3rd match to 15 points if the 2 previous matches were split.
There are also a lot of big differences between beach volleyball and indoor volleyball. First, indoor volleyball is played indoors and beach volleyball is played outside on the beach. It is sometimes also called sand volleyball. Second, the size of both courts are different. The beach volleyball court is 16x8m which is smaller than the 18x9m court that is used for indoor volleyball. The weight of the volleyballs are also different. The volleyball used for beach volleyball is 171-221 grams. The weight of the volleyball for indoor play is 260-280 grams. This volleyball is heavier because during indoor volleyball, the ball needs to travel quicker and faster so it is more challenging to dig the ball.
There is also a big difference between the uniforms that the players wear. In beach volleyball, the girls wear bikini bottoms or board shorts. For their tops, they wear sports bras. The guys wear no shirt and a pair of shorter swim trunks. In indoor volleyball, the girls wear spandex, also called bikers, for their bottoms and wear either a long sleeve or short sleeve shirt for the top. For indoor volleyball the guys wear just about the same thing but they wear longer shorts. The biggest difference between the two sports is in how many players each team has. Indoor volleyball has 6 players. They also have a special rotation that they have to follow. If they happen to get out of this rotation, the ref gives the other team a point and they also get the ball to serve. In beach volleyball, there are only 2 players. They don't have a special rotation. They just have a left and right side of the court.
So in the end, there are some great similarities and differences between indoor volleyball and beach volleyball. They are also both really fun games to play. But, beach volleyball is a little more fun and challenging.

Should Schools become a 4-day School Week?

What would you think if you had all the Mondays of the school year off? Most kids would think yes! One less day of school! Also one day less of homework! Maybe others would think Oh man, that's one less day that I get to be with my friends. I think that we should not have a 4-day school week. The following will talk about the fun facts, the advantages, and the disadvantages of a 4-day school week.
Here are some fun facts about how a 4-day school week got started. The earliest 4-day school week was in a small, rural, town in South Dakota. It started sometime in the 1930’s. Then the 4-day week became more and more popular during the oil crisis in New Mexico. That was around the 1970’s. These days, most school districts with a 4-day week are small and usually have less than a 1,000 students attending the school.
There are a lot of advantages about having a 4-day school week. First, you would save a lot of gas money. You wouldn’t have to pay to transport the kids to and from school every morning and afternoon. It will also cut down on all the foodservice costs. Since energy is such a big crisis in the U.S. right now, having one less day of school a week will really cut down on your energy bills. You wouldn’t have to pay for the lighting of the heating or anything else that takes up a lot of energy.
It is also a great advantage because kids can now get jobs and they can work the whole day on Monday. They could start saving up their money and using it for important stuff instead of always asking mom and dad for money. It is also a great time to schedule appointments and other fun activities so you don't have to pull your kids out of school to do those things.
If the kids had a 4-day school week, teachers would have more time to prepare their lessons and more time to focus on the things that they are going to teach. The staff of the school also won’t likely have to find substitute teachers because they now can do all their appointments and other activities on the Monday that they have off.
But there are also a lot of disadvantages. The kids have to sit in school for a longer period of time. Most kids don't like this because they get restless, especially in the months getting closer to summer because the kids want to be outside. Also since you now have that Monday off, parents might have to put their kids in daycare which would increase the costs of having to send your kids there. Kids have less time to do all of their work since they are getting out of school later. Some kids even have to stay up way past their bed times just so they can finish all of their homework. Some parents might even make their kids give up on sports and other extra cirriculars because they get home so much later.
So in the end there are some very good things like saving lots of money and time but there are also a lot of disadvantages that come along with it.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

Have you ever felt a special connection between you and a few of your friends? That’s what happened between Carmen, Bridget, Lena, and Tibby in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.
In this fiction story, Ann Brashares tells about four girls that grew up as best friends. They all start out as friends from the beginning. Their moms were the ones that started their friendships. They went to Planned Parenting classes together when they were pregnant. Since all of them lived in the same town, they would always hang out during the summer and would do everything together. They have never been away from each other for long periods of time.
Carmen is the girl who starts out narrating the story. But then as the story progresses, she lets it flow out to the stories of the other girls’ summer. Carmen’s parents had gotten a divorce a few years back and this summer she is going to visit her dad in South Carolina. She had this great summer all planned out but when she got there she realized her plans wouldn't work out.
Bridget is the pretty blond haired girl. She is a soccer star and is going to Baja California this summer to go to a soccer camp.
Lena is the quiet but beautiful one who's parents come from Greece. She absolutely loves to paint. She is going to Greece this summer to paint and to visit her grandparents for a few weeks.
Tibby is the girl who is quiet and usually doesn't like to talk about stuff that is going on in her life. But when she does open up she could go on talking about stuff for days.
This is the first summer that the girls would ever be apart. They need something special to connect with each other though the summer. I bet they never knew this connection would come through an old pair of faded blue jeans.
As the girls were hanging out one day, they came across a vintage thrift store and decided to go in and see what was inside. When they got there, Carmen saw a pair of jeans laying there and she dared Lena to try them on. Lean was the one that could fit into anything and she would look beautiful no matter what. After Lena, Bridget tired them on. They fit both of the girls perfectly. They thought how in the world could these jeans fit both of us? Now it was Tibby’s turn. And of course they fit her too! Now the only true test would be if Carmen could fit into them. Carmen slipped on the jeans and they miraculously fit right to her body. The girls thought that these jeans had to be magical. That was how their summer started.
The girls made a long list of rules and then decided what order they would travel in. The girls decided that Lena would get to take them to Greece first.
While Lena was in Greece, she fell in love with a boy named Kostos. They had a great summer together and Lena thought it was all because of this magical pair of pants.
Carmen got the pants next. But while she was in South Carolina she found out  that her dad was engaged and he was getting married at the end of the summer. Carmen had her whole summer with her dad planned out but now it was all ruined. She did not like her new step-mom at all. She also did not like her new stepbrother or sister.
Next the jeans went to Bridget who was down in Baja. Bridget also fell in love but the boy that she wanted was off limits. She couldn't have him because he was one of the coaches at  the soccer camp. One night Bridget put on the jeans and went to find the boy that she liked. They spent the night on the beach together and he fell in love with her. She thought that it was because the pants gave her good luck.
Tibby got the pants after  that. She was the boring one this summer and stayed at home to help her mom with her little brother and sister. Nothing cool happened to her while she was wearing the pants.
The rest of the summer is history.
I especially like this book because it talks about 4 friends who found a special connection between themselves and something, even a pair of jeans, could bring them closer.  Its a great book and it keeps you wanting more. My favorite part of the book is when the girls all get back from their summer vacations. They get together and talk about how their summer went and how all of them were. They kinda had a way of communication during the summer but they for the most part didn't get to talk to each other. So this was a time when they could talk about all of their adventures together. Another one of my favorite parts is when Bridget falls in love with Eric. Ann Brashares makes this part in the book really romantic and it keeps you guessing what is going to happen between them two. I would suggest this book to anyone. It is a very good story and it is a great read.

The Day After Tomorrow

I was 13 years old when my parents died. I remember sitting at their funeral on that frigid, but sunny December morning and asking God, “Why me? Why now?” I never really stumbled upon the answer to that question. I just knew that God must have needed two more angels in heaven and it was time for him to take mine.
After their deaths, my brother Jax and I moved in with my Aunt Josie. She took us in graciously and treated us like her own kids. The first few days all I could do was cry. My best friend, Dakota, would always come over and try to cheer me up. Most of the time it worked. We would go to the coffee shop and hang out or just talk. It was good to let her know how I was feeling about all of this. I loved having someone there that I could vent too. She also knew what I was going through. Her mom had died about a year and a half ago and she was still trying to get over that. It was one of the roughest times in both of our lives and now it means the world to me to have her with me.
After I got used to the fact of living with my aunt, I needed to occupy myself so I could get my mind off my parents. That was when I decided to start rock climbing. I didn’t want to go with a group so I decided that I would go all by myself.
I decided to go to Cabelas and buy all of my rock climbing gear.
It was a bright sunny morning and I went out to an old abandoned building to start my climb. Each day I would go out to this building and climb a little higher every time I tried. I was building up the courage and strength to make it to the top.
Finally after weeks of climbing I made it. I felt like I was on the top of the world and that I had accomplished something that was dangerous. I scaled down the building while thinking to myself that now, it was time for a bigger challenge.
Jax was going to drive me out to Mt. St. Helen's so that I could find a group to climb with. We told aunt Josie that we would be staying in a hotel and would be back in a few days. As we were driving, Jax turned to me and asked, “Why are you doing this? It’s so dangerous. We just lost mom and dad and I can’t even bear the thought of losing you too.” I told him that I was doing this because I miss mom and dad so much and rock climbing makes me feel good and helps the pain go away. It distracts me from thinking about them all the time. We were silent for the rest of the drive. After a few hours, we finally came to the National Park. We found out that there was a group that was hiking up the mountain tomorrow at 5. A.M.
Jax and I stayed in a hotel that night and came back bright and early so I could hike with the others.
This wasn’t a rock climbing group but I brought my stuff along anyway. I knew that I could sneak off and climb alone. This was taking a risk but I knew that I could do it.
It was about noon and I finally got my chance to sneak off. I began to climb and climb and climb. I got about 100 feet up the mountain and my gear got stuck and I could not get it out. All I could see was a perfect crevice running straight up the side of the mountain. I decided that I was going to free hand it. It was really scary at a few places but I managed to get pretty far considering that fact that I didn't have any of my stuff. I was about 150 feet up the mountain and all of the sudden my foot gave way and I lost my grip. I started plunging for the earth beneath me. I was fiercely trying to grab for things to keep myself from falling but nothing worked. There was no cliff or rock sticking out that I could grab onto. I kept on speeding faster right towards my death.
There was this weird beeping noise and I didn't know where it was coming from. I wanted to scream, “Stop! I can’t take it anymore!” But I couldn’t. The silence was drowning out my voice. Then the beeping finally got quieter. I opened my eyes and realized that I was in the hospital. I could feel all the needles in my arms and I could hear my heart beating really fast. The nurse then saw that I was awake and came to ask me how I was feeling. I couldn't even respond to her. I wanted to talk so badly but nothing came out of my mouth. A few minutes after she left, I heard two people talking in the hallway next to my room. I heard my aunt’s voice and another strange voice. I thought it was probably the doctor. I couldn't hear all that he said. but the last thing I did hear was that I would never be able to walk again. My heart dropped and I fell back asleep.

Have you ever.

Have you ever seen the mountains?
                           Terrifying, Rough
         Towering,                                Jagged
Tall,                                                               Edges.
Have you ever felt the ocean?
Hard waves crushing your body, cool water chilling your being
Have you ever smelled the forest?
Evergreens, swaying trees, wild flowers dancing
Have you ever heard an earthquake?
     Rumbling, grumbling, crashing, smashing
Have you ever tasted a tsunami?
Salt water, sloshing, gigantic winds, huge waves
And finally peace.

The Tears

Whenever I see family,
It is a late December Christmas.
I am sitting by the crackling
fireplace playing 4-on-the-couch with the cousins.
I am laughing and talking with
all of my aunts and uncles about the
              Amazing year that I had.

But that's not my story.
My story is Auntie just getting over cancer
but now being abused by her husband.
       Putting on a strong face
So all of us won't worry.
But all she really wants to do
is cry.
